Feature Tour

Features of the Kahu Gyroplane

Super streamlined fully enclosed composite fuselage provides aerodynamic properties that aid propeller efficiency and effective protection of vital components; in addition this aeronautical form is pleasing to the eye. A two seater side-by-side cabin plus engine with removable doors and access panels, giving it all-weather capability and simplified maintenance.

Twin tail booms and a Horizontal stabiliser that provide maximum stability to reduce Pilot Induced Oscillation (PIO).

The structure has a CAD developed dimension to surface ratio. The ergonomics provide a comfortable ride with adequate room between the seats, instrument panel, controls and foot pedals, with great visibility.

Construction. Use of modern poly carbon fibre composites and homogenous materials to provide maximum strength with minimum weight. This construction provides functionality as well as pleasing aesthetics.

Pre-rotator
The engine has been fitted with a veebelt driven hydraulic pump. A hydraulic pre-rotator has been installed (an original ASI design) and is hydraulically coupled to the hydraulic pump. Upon actuation of the hydraulic pump, by means of a control cable, the orderly engagement of the pre-rotator bendix to the rotator head takes place.

This allows the pilot the ability to pre-rotate the rotor to 200 rpm prior to takeoff. This in practice considerably shortens the takeoff distance. Up to 20kw can be transmitted to the pre-rotator then onto the rotor blades by this means.

Prop Speed Reduction Unit
The PSRU is of a dedicated design to achieve by gear drive a reduction of 2.2:1 allowing a 72" 3blade prop to transmit the available engine HP without the propeller going sonic.

Mast Assembly
Supporting mast assembly has been designed to absorb most of the blade pulsing otherwise known as stick shake by building in flexible mountings.

Full suspension (Gas) front and rear
Tough triangulated landing gear with large diameter 16" rough terrain wheels provides additional takeoff and landing roll safety for all applications. Front pedal actuated brakes operate on the rear wheels.

WadeAero Engine
Contains a Mazda 13B rotary engine modified for aeronautical purposes called WADEAero. Regd. NZ Design No 401729 (This configuration is currently not available on the world market)

Consists of:

  • Water-cooled sump
  • Fuel injection
  • ECU
  • Two Aluminium purpose built radiators; one for oil sump cooling and one for engine water cooling
  • Balanced to 8000rpm with a billet flywheel
  • Sump engine mounting plate on rubber mounts
  • Aero-Sport designed Prop speed reduction gearbox

Ease of use
There is an accent on ease of use. Kahu can be towed behind a 2000cc vehicle on a basic specially designed trailer and then stored in a home garage with rotor blades removed.
