FAQ
answers
Flying
What
reasonable cross-country range and speed can I expect?
We currently estimate -Two hours / 200n.m at 85 knots / 96.9miles.
This has yet to be tested.
Can
I take off and land vertically?
No. Unlike a helicopter, the gyroplane cannot do this.
Can
I use the KAHU gyroplane as a glider?
No
What
is the glide ratio?
It is anticipated that the ratio will be 7 : 1 - this has
yet to be tested
I
am a heavy/light pilot. Will I have to change anything to
fly?
No
Components
/ Maintenance
How difficult
is it to remove/replace the rotor blades? Could someone do
it alone?
A lifting device eg block and tackle are required to lift
the rotor head and blades off. This exercise would use two
people. There is also the option of having a winch arrangement
on the KAHU trailer, which would make the blade removal process
manageable by one person.
What
is the KAHU's life expectancy?
We expect 20 years as the KAHU's life expectancy.
Can
I do repairs myself?
Yes
What
about changing or substituting body parts i.e. wheels for
other sizes?
We do not recommend that this be done. The aircraft is certified
based on the existing componentary and settings following
a rigorous CAA testing process.
However we do welcome all suggestions for improvements and
would be happy to hear from you via our online
feedback form.
Transporting / Garaging
How
can I transport my gyroplane?
You can transport the aircraft on a purpose built trailer.
This can be easily towed behind a 2000cc vehicle as shown
in our photos.
The trailer shown is supplied separately from the KAHU and
has NZ Land Transport Authority road certification. Our research
indicates that this configuration will also be accepted in
many countries overseas.
Do
I need to take the rotors off to transport it - how hard is
this to do?
Yes you must take the blades off - refer above.
My
garage door is 7' 0" high. Will the KAHU fit in?
No. The garage door needs to be 2.9mtrs / 9'9" high and
8'4" wide.
Sales
Are
plans of the KAHU available?
No
Can
I use this for spraying crops?
The KAHU can be adapted to be used in many market applications.
The agricultural industry is one application. We welcome all
enquiries from prospective customers regarding customisations
and adaptations. Please contact
us to discuss your requirements in more detail.
Can
I buy one part at a time?
No. The KAHU will be sold as a complete unit. We are able
to advise on a list of recommended spare parts or local suppliers
of these parts. Requests for major failure parts (fuselages
etc) will be investigated prior to sale and supply.
There
may be certain components that are proprietory to ASI which
pilots may wish to purchase for their existing aircraft eg
Hydraulic pre-rotator.
We will review availability of these items as one off sales
as demand warrants. If you have an interest in purchasing
a specific component or would like more detailed information
then please contact us using our order
form.
What
individual purchaser qualification does ASI require before
selling a KAHU?
Before the aircraft sale is completed and aircraft is delivered
we require a copy of the owners pilots licence (as per the
requirements of the CAA laws in the customers country of residence)
as part of our compliance program.
Comfort
I'm
over 6 feet tall. Will I fit in the KAHU cabin?
Yes. There is also a further option of lowering the seat 5
inches/ 100ml which provides additional comfort and visibility
for our taller pilots.
The
seat is very vertically oriented. Is there any way to allow
a seat to recline?
No. It conforms to S.A.E. and is considered to be in the safest
position for flying.
Is
there any luggage capacity?
Minimal baggage space is provided under the seats.
Regulations
/ Learning to fly
Can
I teach myself to fly?
No. We will advise what training options are available with
the KAHU purchase package upon application
I
am an experienced fixed wing/helicopter/airplane pilot. Do
I need lessons?
Yes. Gyroplanes have some unique characteristics that require
familiarisation.
Where
can I get lessons?
We will advise what training options are available with the
KAHU purchase package upon application.
Do
I have to register my gyro?
In NZ - yes. We cannot currently comment on overseas regulations.
